14.06.2008-07.09.2008
The Australian photographer Pat Brassington (born 1942) takes the viewer by surprise with intimate details, veiling and revealing, creating beginnings for stories that remind one of psychological thrillers and playful picture puzzles at the same time. The sensuous images are replete with the eloquent pink of sun-drenched skin, women’s underwear and old ballet shoes. Pat Brassington’s photos will be exhibited also at Galleria Ama (www.ama.fi) in Helsinki during the Helsinki Festival from 2-28 August 2008.
Pat Brassington was born in Hobart, Tasmania where she continues to live and work. She started to pursue her artistic career in her 40s, after the birth of her two daughters. She graduated from the Tasmanian School of Art in the mid-1980s. At first Brassington used traditional black-and-white photography techniques but as digital photography developed in the 1990s she moved on to digital printmaking techniques and image manipulation, and the previous documentary feel in her work was fully replaced by surrealism. In the same way than a poet collects words and visions, Pat Brassington seems to collect objects and details which she then transfers into works of art. Instead of paint and paint-brushes she just uses camera, image manipulation and digital printmaking techniques. With her personal style she has achieved a status as one of the most remarkable Australian photographers.
